Lars von Trier is in a venerable league of his own, and I'm humbled by how left-handedly he spins his socially apropos tales.Īs we progress toward utter materialism, things like “morals” are relegated more and more to an ethereal realm, and magic and miracles are literally becoming the only way to catch the attention of the general population. Perfectly acted, perfectly filmed - brilliant and horrifying.

Unless there is something very wrong with you, there are things in this movie you will wish you could un-see. As far as the film's reputation for horrific imagery: it's deserved. The husband may not see it coming, but the viewer feels/knows/senses something is very, very wrong here. With very little action in the first three acts, the film does an incredible job of creating mounting tension until a truly explosive final act. Unfortunately, as the film points out, doctors/thearpists probably should not treat their own family members, and the husband doesn't pick up on hints from his wife about what she is really feeling. The man, a therapist, thinks he can help the woman deal with it better than doctors can. Outwardly, this is a film about a couple dealing with incredible loss.
The director has said this movie is an expression of how depression feels, and I can see that.
Some reviewers have found this film confusing or overly artsy.
